More about Copperbelt University (CBU), Zambia

The Copperbelt University (CBU) in Zambia is located in the city of Kitwe, where mining activities have been centered for a long time. Zambia, as a country, just like the majority of African countries, is dependent on the mining sector for development. However, mining is a sector that is vulnerable to climate change.

Mining, being an energy-intensive industry, emits greenhouse gases that lead to global warming and as a consequence, to climate change. When large chunks of earth are removed using explosives and machinery, carbon dioxide and other pollutants are released into the atmosphere from the machinery that runs on fossil fuels, while explosives produce carbon monoxide, which results in global warming. As a result of climate change, the growing demand for water to separate minerals from ore is constrained by the scarcity of water supply. Chemical reactions in the refining of minerals also contribute to climate change. Mining infrastructure, therefore, is currently not built with climate change in mind. In addition, climate change has negative economic, social, and environmental consequences. For more information Copperbelt University (CBU), click here.

The CBU participates in this consortium to develop capacity for the development of ICT technologies that will mitigate against climate change as a result of mining and related activities through computing research and teaching Masters programmes on greening the mining sector. Programs offered are:

  • Master of Science in Computer Science (taught).
  • Master of Science in Computer Science (research).

The objectives are to facilitate the:

  • research and development of low-cost solutions on mining impact on weather patterns and mitigation that are relevant to the African context
  • exploration of issues of the impact of climate change as a result of mining
  • investigation of how other developing countries approach climate change mitigation as a result of mining.

The CBU partnership with the African consortium members will be achieved through embedding research training and taught courses into the existing Master's programs on the mitigation of climate change as a result of mining-related activities, facilitating student and staff mobility for internationalization among members of the Consortium, and encouraging the development of innovative solutions on greening the mining sector.
