More about Rhodes University, South Africa

South Africa, like the majority of African countries, is facing an energy crisis, with load-shedding being the order of the day. This is a result of insufficient infrastructure that still utilizes fossil fuels to generate electricity. The fossil fuel-powered power stations are producing massive quantities of carbon dioxide that is polluting the air and impacting climate change, in addition to damaging the environment.

Drawing from the experiences of South Africa, as an African leader in renewable energy integration, this Gr2A Consortium will benefit from skills in greening the energy sector. The South African government has several policies that impact renewable energy integration, that is, the White Paper on energy policy, the White Paper on renewable policy, and the Energy Efficiency strategy, all contributing to the integration of renewable energy into the energy supply network.

A radical shift in the capacity building of renewable energy experts is required, through research training that cuts across disciplines to produce a product that has a broad understanding of renewable energy issues from many angles. Also, trainee programs to upskill students will expose them to real-world environments that prepare them for the world of employment. For more information about Rhodes University, click here.

This consortium brings together current research advances that focus on the implementation of ICT technologies that support renewable energy integration into society to mitigate climate change. Programs offered are:

  • Master of Science in Computer Science.
  • Master of Science in Information Systems.
  • PhD in Computer Science
  • PhD in Information Systems

The objectives should facilitate the:

  • research and development of low-cost ICT solutions that are relevant for the African context on renewable energy
  • exploration of issues of energy sufficiency
  • development of ICT solutions that promote and facilitate the use of renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels
  • investigation of how other developing countries approach digitization of the adaptation of renewable sources of energy
  • review of the effects of climate change in other developing countries and how ICT solutions can contribute to the mitigation against the negative effects of the climate change.

The Rhodes University partnership with the consortium members will be achieved through embedding renewable energy training into existing Masters and PhD research programmes, building research capabilities among partners on renewable energy, facilitating student and staff mobility for internationalization among members of the consortium, and encouraging the development of innovative ICT solutions on renewable energy.
